Thomas Turner, and Sam L. Whitehurst, retiring members of this Board, who gave so unselfishly of their time and energy in fostering the growth and continued success of the three-fold University during their tenure on the Board.

Mr. Harris expressed appreciation to the Chairman of the Board for his leadership in higher education, stating: "Without his singular devotion and dedication and leadership, we would not be here today talking about these golden opportunities that we now have. I think history is going to record that his efforts in behalf of higher education equal his efforts for education in the elementary school and in the high school. I think we would all today join in expressing our gratitude and our appreciation to you, Mr. Chairman. And I think we should add our sincere appreciation to the Legislature for its wisdom in adopting the program that you have promoted and guided that has brought us to this happy day. We now have one University. At present we have three campuses. Now is the time to remember that we have one University. We've got one Board; we ought to close ranks in the hope that this University will move on to the great fields and opportunities that all of us envision for it."

Mr. Harris' remarks were followed by Mr. Lenox Cooper and Mr. Walter Smith, each of whom expressed deep gratitude to the Governor, the Legislature, and to the Board for backing the report of the Committee and giving it wholehearted support. Mr. Riddle also expressed appreciation and asked that the Board stand and honor the courage, integrity and patience of President Friday and his staff in steering this bill through.

Special Meeting of Executive Committee

The meeting then adjourned.
