Governor Sanford expressed appreciation to the retiring faculty members, stating "Many people ask me as I have a chance to move around the country what makes North Carolina different, and I tell them I think it's our University system, the leadership it has furnished throughout this century, and I think what North Carolina is today is the result of your efforts, your contributions, and your helping to mold the citizenship as you work with the leaders as they come through our University. So, on behalf of the people of the state I take this moment to express our gratitude to you; the fact that you have invested your lives in the hopes of North Carolina. There is no way to measure what you have meant to North Carolina and we're all most grateful."
