Woman's College - Reynolds Scholarships

The following resolution of appreciation, read by Mrs. Parker, was unanimously adopted:

On the 14th day of December, 1962, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation announced a gift to the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina. It was a most substantial gift, in monetary value, to set up 48 student scholarships of $4,800 each over a period of four years, beginning with 12 in the fall of 1963. This is the largest scholarship grant ever made to the Woman's College, and of equal importance, is the most substantial affirmation of faith in its educational program.

This grant is a personal token of appreciation from a family of children to their mother, exemplifying the premise on which the College was founded, that an educated woman is a ruling influence in the life of a family, and the premise on which the educational program of North Carolina was revitalized in the early 1900's -- that it is only the education of all of its citizens that a state will grow strong and prosper.

The Woman's College Scholarships will be known as the Katharine Smith Reynolds Scholarships, in memory of an alumna of the College, the mother of Richard J Reynolds, Jr. , Mary Reynolds Babcock, Nancy Reynolds Bagley Verney, and Zachary Smith Reynolds. Two of these children, Richard, Jr. , and Nancy Reynolds Bagley Verney are living, and bolhcfthem are active in the Foundation which bears their brother's name, the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation. Richard J. Reynolds, Jr. , serves as the president of the Foundation and Mrs. Verney as a trustee.

Mrs. Reynolds, then Katharine Smith of Mt. Airy, Surry County, North Carolina, was a student at the Woman's College from 1897 to 1900. She was one of that pioneer group who received, at first hand, the crusading desire for education that Dr. Mclver inspired in all who walked with him. Her later life bore evidence that she had mastered what he defined, in part, as the real worth of a college:

"...the feeling of common responsibility, the habit of tolerance toward those with whom one does not entirely agree; the giving up of small rights for the sake of greater rights that are more essential...the spirit of overlooking the blunders of others and helping those who are weak;...the love of one's fellow workers...faith in human progress; confidence in right and the belief in God."
