3. The right of publication of the results of any extra-mural work shall be reserved by the faculty member in charge.

4. Neither the name of the University nor that of its faculty shall be exploited.

5. Responsibility for the application of these policies and for the integrity and significance of each project shall rest primarily upon the individual faculty member concerned. Approval of the department head shall be required in all cases. Activities involving a significant amount of time as determined by the department head shall require approval by the dean and the Administrator.

6. In those schools and departments where the compensation of faculty members is governed by a stated ceiling on professional earnings, all such earnings which are not paid through the University shall be reported to the appropriate dean at least once each fiscal year.

7. In those instances where the extra income of faculty members is derived from professional activities over and beyond their basic faculty responsibilities, and is deposited to special University accounts, such funds may be used for the following purposes:

(a) Payment of the operating and overhead expenses of the account.

(b) Payment of salaries in accordance with approved procedures and limitations.

(c) Payment, on behalf of faculty members, of those expenses requisite to approved faculty professional activities, within the limit of existing University policies.

(d) Social security taxes and contributions to retirement plans and insurance plans not otherwise provided by law.

Section 2-3 School of Medicine - Policies for Remuneration of the Faculty.

The faculty of the School of Medicine will be called upon to care for patients and to perform other professional services, including sponsored research. The income received from such service will help support teaching and research through augmenting University salary funds and contributing in other ways to the development of the Medical School and its departments.

All charges for professional services rendered by a member of the faculty of the University Medical School shall be billed and collected by the University. Neither royalties nor honoraria received for activities such as occasional outside lectures shall be regarded either as income to the Medical School or as part of the individual's annual salary.

Income from professional services other than sponsored research or training, rendered by the faculty members of each clinical department of the Medical School (internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Pathology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Radiology, Surgery-including Anesthesiology, and Hospital Administration) will be kept in a separate account designated by the name of the department. These funds shall be acquired and used by the department as follows:

A. Income

(1) All funds derived from clinical services rendered by a member of the clinical faculty of the School of Medicine to patients in the North Carolina Memorial Hospital or from consultations outside the city, and collected by the Private Patient Service, shall be deposited in the particular Departmental Operational Account.

(2) Fees collected for professional services rendered staff patients by a regular member of the attending staff and done by him because of necessity for the welfare of the patient and/or because of a requested or implied private patient-physicial relationship as in the case of, certain governmental and other sponsoring agencies and paid for by Blue Shield or other third parties shall be credited to the Departmental Operational Account of that particular physician.
