May 1st Sabbath
Mr Robins held morning Service
Mr Gibson afternoon Do
Miss Holland went out morning Service
the Laundress left early also.
I went out to evening service, upon my
return Miss Holland reported to me that
Charlotte Hanley had struck Harriet Penketh.
Harriet has charge of the Lamps and seeing
the Lamp prepared for the Minister for
evening Service burning brightly she
told Charlotte (who was reading by it)
that she ought not to have turned the
wick up, and came to ask me if it was
to be allowed, as I was just leaving for
Church I asked Miss Holland to put out
the light until the arrival of a Minister
this offended Charlotte so much that when
Harriet went upstairs to make a bed for
a fresh Inmate, Charlotte followed her
and struck her in the face.

I have spoken to Charlotte about striking
Harriet last night. She answered me
very rudely saying I was most unfair
singling her out for reproof, that she did
not strike her but was sorry now she
had not done so. The Laundress tells
me Charlotte acknowledged to her that
she had struck Harriet, and that she
had spoken to the Ladies who had visited,
about me, and told them that I was
always listening to Harriets tales. Poor girl
her temper causes her to say much that is untrue
