October 14th.
Wednesday.
M. A. Smith went back by the 9 oclk train
I took Jane Brownlee to Petty's Hotel this
morn'g. Mrs. Roach engaged to see her safe to her
destination.

M. A. Wilson started 11 oclk pr. Steamer. she repeatedly
said how thankfull [thankful] she was for being taken into the
Refuge. and would do all in her "power to be
a credit to the ladies, and do good for herself."

Capt. Carmicheal sent a note to his wife, and a
cab to take her home. I sent to tell him she could not
be allowed to leave the Refuge with any except
himself.

Thursday 15th.
Capt. Carmicheal called 5 oclk last eve'g
and wished to take Mary with him. I told him she
had no clothes fit, and that it would also be
necessary for her to see the ladies before she went
I called her to him. They were clasped in each others
arms for several minutes, neither of them
able to speak a word. but Mary sobbing aloud.
at last he gave her a lock of hair, taken fm [from] their
dead child. after weeping over it for sometime
she told him how sorry she was for having been
such a bad wife, but she had learnt a lesson
since she came to the Refuge which she could
never forget. She blessed God for ever bringing her
here, as she had been taught her duty and seen
her folly as she had never seen it before, she tried
to tell him about the awfull [awful] deed she contemplated
when I so providentelly [providentially] spoke to her, and eventually
took her in, but she could not, and I had to tell him
she "had that morn'g intended to [underline]make away[end underline]
with herself".
