May 2nd Sat'y
The Barry's called to say that Mr. Parker said he had
nothing to do with releasing Kate, that they must go to
Rev J. Smith. They called again 10 clk to say Mr. Smith could
not let her out " but gave them a note to the sheriff.
I asked Mary Ann Smith what made her
think of coming to the Refuge? "Well, I had been
drinking hard, but one morn'g I lay awake in
bed, and it was like as if something was talking
to me, and said, leave off your bad life and go
somewhere away, and I says to myself, where shall
I go? When I got up, the girls asked me to have
a glass of brandy, but I wouldn't taste it. I went away,
I sailed along in the pouring rain and never
stop'd till I got to the gate, and now after being
here 12 months I hope I'll [underlined]never[underlined] go back to my old wicked ways again.

Sabbath 3rd
We expected Rev'd W. Mills this morn'g but was
dissapointed. A Mr. R. Todd came 3oclk
no Minister came in the eve'g. We read the
25th Chap "matthew sang Bishop Heber, missionary Hymn
and prayed, all but Mary McIveny and M. A. Wilson were
in attendance they are both suffering from cold and allowed
to go to bed after tea, and sent Mary a basin of grual and
ordered her warm waters for her feet, as I am afraid of her
getting worse, being so feverish.

Monday 4th
Kate Barry's Mothercalled to say Mr. Smith wanted
to meet her here tomorrow at 10 o clk, and giver her, her
daughter. Sarah Lee's Mother came demanding
her "child" I told her tomorrow was the day she
could then see the ladies. No. I'll have her now, she's [underlined]my
own[underlined], and you have no right to keep her &c I was obliged
to shut the gate by force, she had place her foot trying to prevent me.
