September 28th.
Friday. Mr Roberts consented to take Ellen Holmes to
the Captain, in whose care she is to go to
her situation. he urged upon the Capt. not to
give her any intoxicating drink - Ellen has signed
the temperance pledge, and promised "faithfully to keep it".
Received a letter from Eliz'th Thompson-she is well
and still in the same situation, her Master having raised her
wages to 12/. per week rather than part with her!

Saturday 29th.
Sent the messenger with three parcels
containing Refuge books & papers to J. Caldwell
but Mr. Caldwell Junior [sup] said [end sup] "O we have nothing more
to do with them, I sent them to Mrs. Roberts, I could not touch them".

Lady Young and Miss Walton came to see the
garden, her ladyship was ammused at seeing
the care we had taken of some choice little plants she sent us,
each little root being shaded by a Jam tin, she
said "why you'll kill them with kindness".

Rebecca Cooper has again relapsed
this eve'g at eve'g worship the Matron selected 14th
and 15th Chapr. Job to be read, and when it came to
Reb'cas turn she would not open her lips. untill she
had been asked [underline] three times [end underline], she then said "I dont want to read" - dont want to read the bible.! how dreadfull. [dreadful] theres a time to read and there's also
a time to be silent, [underline] in the grave [end underline], afterwards she joined with us & when the 10th verse was read - "Man giveth up the ghost and where is he"? we said ha where? there is only two places, heaven or hell! then, [sup] 12th verse [end sup] "they shall not wake nor be raised out of their sleep". we[underlined] shall be amongst the sleepers,
there; the wicked cease from trembling and the weary are at
rest". we had no more trouble with any of them this eve'g.
