September 11th Tuesday
Lady Young brought 12 volumes of
the "Leisure Hour" and ordered
improvements to the garden to be made.
A lady that accompanied her gave 5/- to buy
oranges for the inmates.
Ester is so naughty and wicked, and a pocket-
handkerchief belonging to the [underline] town washing [end underline] was found in her possession.

Wednesday 12th
Emily Rivers will not work. when sent
to the laundry she pleads [underlined] weakness! [end underlined] when sewing is given her, she spoils it. tried to get
a little service out of her in weeding the garden
but its all a failure - a beautiful rose tree was
found torn up by the root, which we think is her doing.

Thursday 15th
I wish I knew how to manage these rebellious
girls better. O Lord give me strength & wisdom.
Ann Scanlon is disabled from work through her bad
finger.

Friday 14th
Gave our collector Mr. Bates's promisry [promissory] note for
£5.10 for washing. he resides at No. 1 Caldwell Terrace
and has been paying his rent all this time - but pleads
inability to pay us. Matron has told Mr. Caldwell about
it several times. the debt owing since Fby 1865.

Saturday 15th
Emily Rivers and Ester will not scrub, so the
Matron sent to tell them to come into the committee
room to help fold clothes & stayed folding with them
untill [until] noon and managed to keep them at work.
but they'll do nothing when we are away.
Emily says she has been 10 years in the colonies, and that
[underlined] seven [end underlined] of those years were spent in different prisons she "thinks the inmates [underlined] ought [end underlined] to have tobacco provided because [underlined] Government gives [end underlined] it to prisoners. she would rather be in gaol than here on that account.
