Tuesday
Annie Kirkwood came this eve'g she is
one of the two that we sent to Rev'd Mrs. S. Smith's
to ask if she might come in for 5 months.
She was in here before, she was brought in
by her Mother, and brother - in fashionable
attire, low neck'd dress, bracelets &c
but she would not stay, she escaped out of
committee room window, after trying to get
permission from the ladies, told them this was not a [underlined]prison[end
underlined], that her Mother had no right to put her in, as she was of age.

Wednesday Jane Drew has paid 5/ to Mr. Pearsey
21 for an advertisement, she is now getting
anxious to settle in a situation the
poor thing seems very sorrowfull [sorrowful] and
penitent, and often tells the Matron, she
"believes coming to the Refuge has been a
blefsing[blessing] to her." When any of our naughty
rough girl [s] have vexed her, she battled with
her feelings and instead of resenting or rendering
railing for railing, she would say (when we
were talking the matter over [sup]privatly[end sup])
privately] " I [underlined] deserve [end underlined] it all."
I have learnt a lesson here, which I will never
forget."

Thursday Josephine and Martha are the best needle women
22 we have had for some time. in addition to neat
sewing, they add the rear [rare?] quality [sup](in here)[end su] of diligence.
