Friday Through the kindness of Lady Young we have
had a gardener four days this week. the beautiful
rain and [crossed out] has done wonders for our garden and
we were looking forward with pleasure to
see Lady Young's kind approving smile, when she
saw the improvements, but we are dissapointed [disappointed] as she has gone away much to our regret (for
a month or 6 weeks.) if we had known
sooner, the gardner should not have come
untill [until] a little before her expected return.
This afternoon it is wet, that he can't work
outside have given him money to buy 5 panes
of glass which he will put in.

Saturday 3rd Revd Bickford called to ask if Maria Smith had left
a note! (asking admission) she had been to their house
and obtained a note from Mrs. Bickford a day or two
ago. She called again this morn'g and told them
Mrs. Roberts said, she could not take her in
until teusday [tuesday], and got 1/- from them. Mr Bickford told her to go and wait at the Refuge gate, untill [until] he came, and he would see Mrs. Roberts.
Maria had neither delivered the note, nor yet waited
at the gate for Mr. Bickford.
Mr George, School Master Nutral Bay [Neutral Bay] applied for a general servant, he selected Mary Saunders, and offered her 8/- pr. week. sent him to ask Mrs Goodlet's
permission to take her at once, because they were without
a servant
Mary did "not like going so sudden, without a bit of crinoline [underlined] or nothing!! [end underlined] she was told the ladies never
provided Crinoline & that her outfit would be bought on Monday and sent to her, but if she wished to stay in the Refuge, say so, reminded her of her fretfulness and dispair because "[underlined]nobody[end underline] was
