1865. [underscored]
December 21st
Thursday. This has been a day of trial, very busy
trying to oblige several of our customers
by sending home their clothes today, instead of
Saturday. (the weather fearfully hot) and amidst it
all, a quarrel! which ended in a fight ( the first since the Matron has been here.) Susan Johnson is a miserable woman continually "at" someone. she charged Betsy McMahon with taking buttons, and strings off the customers clothes, when she was using them, and called her "irish romancatholic" and
"why didnt she go to her [underlined] own place [end underlined] &c &c" they were so angry and furious, that Susan had to be locked up,in the Com't room for the hours during which her fury seemed gradually to cool down, and [sup]^she promised to behave better in future, she was liberated.

Friday The two Miss Baptistes' called to enquire what
22nd we should need for Xmas? they were told there
were 36 inmates, for whom we would thankfully
receive anything he thought proper to send, but
to say what we wanted, would seem like dictation
The young ladies still appeared anxious "for a list"
They were then asked would they like to see the list
of what their papa sent last year? the journal was
fetched in which they read for themselves all about
it. Christina picked some peas out of
the garden - eating them as she walked up the
garden to school in the presence of both teachers
and her school fellows, evidently out of wickedness
she told Miss W she "did not care". let em put me
out at the gate."
