1865. [underscored]
December 18th.

Monday. Lady Young visited us, and brought
£2. 0. 0. to pay the gardener. she said the progress
and improvement was very satisfactory.
When her ladyship saw little Emma and heard her
character she seemed distressed, and calling her aside
talked so earnestly to her, about the dreadful end of
naughty children &c, that the child wept, then she
turned to the Matron and said, "I am glad to see
those tears, I have better hopes now." then she
asked Emma would she like a garden of her own!" Yes.
where would you like it to be? Em dried her eyes &
and looked round, and pointing to the corner near
the [underlined] dust heap! [end underlined] said "there" Her Ladyship said, come let us go and look at it. She then promised if she was a good girl, she would give her seeds &c and
"a little spade and rake for herself" - and then told
her to run to school.
After her Ladyship had walked round the garden, she went
to the school, there we found Christina had been
very naughty. her Ladyship remonstrated with her - asked
her to beg the teachers pardon for being so naughty.
Cristina said "no" what wont you for me?" "no!" wont
you for Lady Young?" "No." "Why you cannot be in your
sences [senses] to talk like that, I'll go away," after her ladyship had been about 10 minutes in the garden, she desired the Matron
to call Christina, and she conversed privately with her,
and got a promise from her "to try to be good."
