November 29th Wednesday.
Having sent to tell the police about
Eliz'th Smith's escape, one of them brought her
and Maria Duke back a little before 5 o clk this morng.
They both consented to stay untill friday, to be dismissed
by the ladies. After permitting these two
naughty girls, to lie down to rest, sending them breakfast
and telling them to try to sleep, that I would lock them
in to keep the other girls from disturbing them, they
remained quiet untill 1 oclk. after dinner Maria said they
had considered the thing over in their minds, and
would rather go. Mrs G Wise talked to them, but
they still persisted in saying they would not stay,
and with a sorrowfull heart the Matron opened the
gate, knowing [word underlined] that they were going back to sin and
wickedness.
Hester Bruce and Charlotte Perry (the two youngest) made
their escape about 8 oclk in the eveg.

Thursday 30th.
A Police man brought Hester Bruce
back. she was so dirty. having slept in a water closet
Charlotte Perry's sister called to ask if
it was true that she had run away - she
cried and seemed very sorry when told that
she had -
