Saturday. Maria Smith is so difficult to manage she tried to persuade Mary Brown to give her her stays shimee & ngt Gown "to bolt in" [underscored] as she had none of her own and she "darnt [daren't] take Refuge things lest she should get locked up"
Sabbath 3rd Revd W. Mills preached 11 oclk.
Revd R. Blain 3 oclk and Mr W. Leyton in the eveng.

all in the Refuge inmates in good health.

Monday 4th J. Caldwell Esq. called and made arrang ments with the Carpenters who were already here putting a new roof on the school room, to build a bathroom we also (through him) received 27 beautiful trees in pots from Mr. Shepherd there is one for each lady belonging to our Comm. and one for Miss Little because of her liberality to this Institution.

Teusday 5th Lady Young and Lady John Taylour [Taylor?] visited. They walked up to the garden asked if we "had spent all the money yet", replied that it was spent long since, that we had a gardener in constant work this last fortnight. Lady Young said "Sir John will come to see you, and give you a few pounds towards the expence. Her Ladyship looked into the school, and spoke encouragingly to the girls

Mary Ann Grant's case was related to them in which they both were deeply interested and Lady Young spoke to her for some time told her that coming into the Refuge was the best thing she could do - under the circumstances.
