Sabbath.
July 16th Last night after we had all retired the bell was rung, the bedroom window was thrown open when Inspector Reed called out "where's the Matron" here's two girls climbing over the gate. Matron ran down without shoes or dress, only a cloak on, found Mary Ann Burns, and Sarah White just got down they had thrown down their boots ( 2 pr. tied together) into the street. a policeman brought them in & when he saw M. A. Burns he said " I know you well, you are a sad drunkard". Inspector Reed said he would lock them up, but M. Ann begd [begged] he would let them "stay till teusday [tuesday] to be dismissed by the ladies, and they would behave well" so they were allowed to go to bed.
this morng. when we got up, it was found that they had both gone! The Matron went at 8oclk to Danes Bathry to see if Sarah White had gone home. she had not. - her parents were greatly distressed, When told she would be put charge for stealing the Refuge Clothing, they begd that we would spare her for thier [their] sakes that they would willingly pay all the damage, A list of what they stole was given to the Police together with a discription [description] of the girls.
