was an auctioneer and commission agent dealing in rural properties in Sydney. The family lived
in Paddington and in other parts of the inner city suburbs. He became a director of various mining
companies and developed a business in importing American goods. Some time after 1855 the
Hebblewhites moved to Randwick and built a home Brisbane Villa which was named after the
Brisbane Grove property of the Walkers at O'Connell Plains. Samuel Hebblewhite became an
alderman of the first Randwick Council. Susannah Hebblewhite died on 26 June 1866 at Randwick.
An obituary commented on her rigid observance of propriety, abstinence and kindness. She taught
classes of young people in the York Street (Wesleyan Church) vestry and later ran Sunday schools
in her house in Randwick. She was buried in St. Jude's Cemetery in Randwick.424 Samuel
Hebblewhite then married Mary Thompson on 21 September 1867 at Woollahra Congragational
Church. He continued his buisness interests in Sydney and lived in Burwood. He established a
flourishing business in the sale of sewing machines and in 1878 visited the international Paris
Exposition and then went on to England to visit relatives there.425 He died on 27 May 1882 at
Burwood and his second wife died on 17 August 1889 at Burwood. Samuel and Susanna
Hebblewhite had nine children.

6.2.1 BENJAMIN BECKETT HEBBLEWHITE (1847-1877)

Benjamin Beckett Hebblewhite was born on 23 January 1847 and married in 1869
in Sydney, Ann Dawson. He took over his father's business interests in 1868. In 1872 he became
a planter with his brothers, Will, Samuel and Charles, on a plantation bought by his father in the
New Hebrides. He also became agent for the Sydney firm of Scott, Henderson & Co and dealt with
island produce, goods for the residents and land transfers. He lived in Escema, Havannah Harbour
on Efate Island. He died on 4 February 1877 of Blackwater Fever in the New Hebrides and she
married in 1890 in Ashfield, Richard T. Baker and lived in Ryde.426 There was no issue.

6.2.2 (WILLIAM) RAYNER HEBBLEWHITE (1848-1888)

William Rayner Hebblewhite was born on 2 May 1848 and married at Windsor on
1 January 1878, Mary Amelia Busby. He was educated at Sydney Grammar School and at Old
Newington. After school he entered his father's business and opened a branch in Melbourne. He
spent short periods working in the New Hebrides with his brothers. Then he settled at Burwood and
became very involved with the Methodist Church there. He died on 28 April 1888 at Lawson and
she died on 23 June 1905 at Mosman. They had six children: Susannah Mary Hebblewhite who was
born in 1878 and died in 1945 and married Albert Bishop on 6 January 1912 at Mosman and they
had four children: Gertrude Hebblewhite who was born in 1909 and married Walter Theobald in
1909 at Mosman and had three children and died in 1919; Maude Busby Hebblewhite who was born
in 1882 and married on 5 October 1907 in Mosman John Bishop and died in 1970 after having four
children; Mable Frances Hebblewhite who was born in 1884 and died in 1963; (William) Rayner
Hebblewhite who was born in 1885, died in 1966 and married in 1912 at Ryde C. Maisie Fraser and
they had two children; and Winifred Mary Hebblewhite who was born in 1888 and died in 1955 and
