5.4 WILLIAM WALTER HASSALL (1846-1914)

William Walter Hassall was born at Cobbitty on 31 January 1846. He attended Geelong
Grammar School from March 1856 until at least 1858 winning prizes for Drawing, Writing and
Classics. He was there when the new school building was opened in 1858 and in 1910 wrote an
account of the teachers and pupils who were at the school in his time. In 1862 he and W. Hamilton
of Bruyelbert drove cattle from Coleraine through Central Australia to Darwin.394 He married Edith
Inwood on 7 August 1889 at All Saints' Church, St. Kilda.

He worked on the family property Wootong Vale until it was sold in 1870 and then worked
on overland telegraph lines until 1872 when he drove 250 horses from Coleraine through Central
Australia to Darwin with a few other men including several black boys. The trip took eight months.
William Hassall followed pastoral pursuits for the rest of his life and in 1914 had a lease on 99,000
acres in the Northern Territory.

His family lived at Young when his youngest child, John Hassall, was born in 1895 and it
was at Nimmitabel when his son, James Hassall, died in 1907. William Hassall managed a butter
factory at Nimmitabel and had a turkey farm there. Later the family moved to Nethercote when he
had an orchard while his wife managed the Nethercote Post Office which was burnt down in 1917
and the family lost most of its possessions. It is said that William Hassall was at one time the
mayor at Eden where he died on 8 March 1914 and was buried in Pambula cemetery.

William and Edith Hassall had four children.

5.4.1 KATHLEEN ANN HASSALL (1890-1964)

Kathleen Ann Hassall was born on 17 August 1890 in Dandenong and married
Edward Meaker in 1912 at Eden in New South Wales. They had eight children: Henrietta Elsie
Meaker who was born in 1913 at Eden and married in 1933 at Bega, Thomas Alfred Targett; Edith
Meaker who was born and died in 1915 at Eden; Ada Eileen Meaker who was born in 1916 in Eden
