Mary Hassall survived her husband by nearly 50 years dying at Berkshire Park on 15
December 1883.337 Berkshire Park was sold by her son after her death.

Jonathan and Mary Hassall had the following children: Rowland born in 1820, Richard
James born in 1821, Jonathan Lawry born in 1824, Edwin Otoo born in 1826, James born in 1827,
Mary Cover born in 1828, Charles born in 1831 and Elizabeth born in 1835.

CHILDREN OF JONATHAN AND MARY HASSALL

3.1 ROWLAND HASSALL (1820-1904)

Rowland Hassall was born on 29 August 1820 at Parramatta. He attended King's School
with his brother Richard Hassall and his cousin James Samuel Hassall in the year it opened in 1832.

He became a pioneer settler in the 1850s at Braidwood in New South Wales where his
cousin, James Samuel Hassall, also had land. It was at Braidwood that Hassall met Tom Roberts,
a noted horsebreeder who was killed when he fell from a horse in 1852 when he was 28 years old,
leaving a widow and three children. Two years later, on 2 December 1854, Rowland Hassall
married Elizabeth Jane Royds (1824-1875), the widow of Thomas Molineux Royds. She was the
daughter of William Roberts.338 Elizabeth Hassall brought two children into her marriage with
Rowland Hassall - Edmund M. Royds and William E. Royds.339

Rowland Hassall was a horsebreeder too and was extremely successful. In 1867 one of the
horses he owned in a partnership with Roberts and Royds, Tim Whiffler, won the Melbourne Cup
as a five year old. The horse was trained by Etienne De Mestre who also owned and trained winner
of the first two Melbourne Cups (1861-1862), Archer.

Rowland Hassall died on 7 September 1904 at Braidwood and his wife, Elizabeth Hassall
died at Durham Hall, Braidwood on 13 July 1875. They had two children:

3.1.1 ELIZABETH R HASSALL (1856-1938)

Elizabeth Hassall was born on 28 May 1856 in Sydney and married in 1906 William
H. Readett. She died in 1938 in Inverell and he died in 1915 there. They had no children.

3.1.2 ROWLAND GEORGE HASSALL (1858-1933)

Rowland George Hassall was born on 14 August 1858 near Braidwood and married
