Eimeo 10th August 1816
Very Dear Friend,
I take my pen to giving you
a few hasty lines by the present conveyance.
Having much writing to do & little time I must
be very brief. Indeed it is needless for me
to say much, as I trust you will see Samel
very soon after this reaches you; as he is
to go on the Active which is to sail very
shortly. Saml has a liking to the sea
& is in several respects cut out for it,
and there are several circumstances and
considerations which seem to render it
advisable for him to take to it; but
considering it a calling so unfriendly to mo
rality & the growth of religion & interests of the same, I feel averse to his
so doing, and would rather he should learn
some trade or business by which he might
otherwise get his living. however
should he go to sea it would be well for him to have
a trade, and there is none I think would answer him
