Lampeter May 1819
Mrs Birnie
Dear Madam
My brother informs me that I have incurred
(at least in uncertain measure) your displeasure; than
which believe me I would sooner incur that of any of
my other Port Jackson friends. My excuse for not writing
is my not remembering to have made a promise however
hope this will in some degree atone for my misconduct
for though activated at so great a distance I have not
and trust never shall forget your kindness to me
whilst residing under your hospitable roof - Being unwell just after my landing I wrote
to Mr Hall who called and to whom I delivered the
letters after my recovery. I went to see
Mr H & family but after calling at several houses
in Cannon Street found to my disappointment that
it could not be the right street and after my

arrival at home my mistake appeared evident. I called twice at
the office the last time saw Mr B who appeared to receive
me very cooly however upon meeting him afterwards at
the missionary rooms he said he should be glad to see
me. I called but missed him - I had the plea-
sure of seeing Mr G Birnie several times who appeared a pleasant
young man he asked me to dine with him but I was
disappointed being engaged however I called at his house
and had a long chat with Mrs B and the little ones She
appeared a very pleasant lady I must not omit to
inform you that a Rose Hill parrot (I think a present of yours
got to them) amused me much. what appeared very
strange to me was it having changed to nearly the
colour of a Lorry.
