Liverpool July 19 1813
My Dear Son Jas Mullen
This is with my tender love & blessing to you after a long & unhappy time of not hearing from you of almost 3 years I at last to my great surprise but yet unspeakable comfort received your letter dated December 2 1812 from a distant part of the world - Dear Child when I saw Botany Bay mentioned I thought my heart would have burst till I read further. But, my child how came you to leave Mr Gladstons employ & to bind yourself an apprentice to such a distant part of the world. You do not say how long you are bound for or may I flatter myself with the hopes of ever seeing you again but now I fear my hope is all over
