newspapers. The banks in Palo Alto were closed the first few days. Many students from the University went by bus or car to help with the devastation cleanup in San Francisco. Of course, the University closed classes the day of the quake, and we got our school credits as of April 18th on our attendance at classes – no finals required. Oscar and I managed to get our money out of the bank and get a ride on one of the first trains to go from San Francisco to San Jose about a week after the 18th. From there we got passage on another train to L.A. where we were met by my father. It was wonderful to get home!
