Rockland 6-3-1915 123

6-3-1915, The Asso. met with Edith
Hallowell as hostess, for the first time, her
mother and sisters adding much to the occasion.

We thought this old homestead never looked
more beautiful than upon that afternoon. Those
who inspected the flower garden and chicken-yard
were enthusiastic in their appreciation of both points
of interest. Guests were Eliza H. Miller, Mary Magruder,
Cornelia H. Bentley, Mary H. Stabler, Eliza M.
Chichester, Clara Hallowell, Anna T. Nesbitt, Florence
M. Bond, Helen B. Lea, Emma E. Bond, Florence M. Bentley,
Helen Nesbitt and Sarah Chichester many of whom we
did not see until supper was served.

The sentiment for the day was given by
Sarah M. Hallowell, a fine poem by the late Benj
Hallowell, Jr. entitled “Faith”-

“When in our times of grief and sorrow
The burden seems too great to bear,
When looking forward to the morrow
We see no hope presented there,
Hark! to a voice from Heaven calling –
Come unto me, all ye that weep,
And I will stop your tears from falling.
Will give to my beloved sleep.”

Sarah T. Miller’s selection was in praise
of friendly manners, the kindly thought and
word that are often more valued by our
neighbors than we suppose.

Elma Chandlee introduced us to the wonderful
roses of Bulgaria. A large tract of
country south of the Balkan Mountains is
a garden-spot at this season, not only miles
of roses, but lilacs, geraniums, & gentians
grow wild in a profusion rarely seen elsewhere.

Emma Bond gave extracts from a recent
“Life of John Brown”, which stated that his
favorite books, even in youth, were The Bible,
“Josephus”, “Plutarch’s Lives”, “Pilgrim’s Progress”,
and Baxter’s “Saint’s Rest”. He read and reread
Gideon’s story in the Book of Judges, and it is
thought was inspired by it to try to force the
captive race of our country. Certainly a
more daring attempt than his at Harper’s
Ferry, was never chronicled in the history
