Elma Chandlee read a fine tribute to the “Country
Doctor” which she could appreciate as her father
was one with many friends. She also gave,

“So Little One Can Do”

“But add your little to mine, that’s two!
And when another adds his to ours
Slowly increaseth the combined powers,
That flow and meet in a mutual strife
To bless and brighten the toil of life.”

Hallie J. Bentley recited “My Neighbor Jim”
who was truly a remarkable man since all
kinds of weather suited him “to a T” and he could
always turn every trouble inside out and find a
blessing tucked away somewhere.

By request of Mary E. Thomas, who had
brought the poem, H. J. B. also gave one of her
own compositions that had appeared in several
papers and was read recently by Miss
Janet Richards to her class on Current events
in Washington. –

“War”

“War! War among Christian nations!
While the world looks on aghast,
And blood runs red, as though it were shed
In barbarous ages past.

Has Christianity failed us?
That a thing like this can be?
The blood must flow, with its tide of woe
Like the waves of a troubled sea?

It is not the fault of the soldier
It is his “not to reason why” –
When the summons has come he must leave his loved home
To fight for his king, and die!

Has the gospel of Peace then failed us
That was sung when our Lord was born?
Shall the world outside of this hope, deride,
