Sarah T. Miller read a story wherein a childless
couple adopted 2 homeless babies and were greatly
blessed therefrom. S. T. M. wished there were more
adopted children and fewer adopted dogs among
rich and poor.

Florence M. Wetherald brought a fine poem by
Ella W. Wilcox, whose birth-day we were celebrating
unknown to most of the company.

Edith Hallowell gave an extract from “John
Muir’s Life”, describing a Scotch boy’s enjoyment
of the skylark, whose marvelous song has been
the inspiration of many writers. Florence M. Bond
told of the Rockefeller donation lately, - land for
migrating birds by which the lives of numbers may
be saved. A communication from the Co.
Federation was referred to our next mtg.

The names of Amy and Elise Hutton, to be
considered as one member only, we supposed, were
put upon our waiting list.

The Sec’y brought a very official-looking
letter she had rec’d from Eng. asking aid in
so moulding public opinion that injustice
should not be done our ancient Mother by us
Americans in regard to the terrible war now
raging in Europe. This paper was signed by
Consuelo Marlborough, Mary E. Chamberlain, Ruth
Bryan Owen, Mary Harcourt and Helen Mae Millan
All native-born Americans with Eng. husbands.

The Sec’y also exhibited a handsome picture of
her correspondent the Duchess, coronet and all,
and said the reading matter accompanying
the letter was very convincing she thought.

M. B. T.’s personal contribution was some acct.
of that noble woman Margaret Gaffney of New Orl.
whose fine statue she had seen in that city
some years since. This philanthropist was
a native of Balto. and of Irish descent, moving
to New Orleans in early womanhood. She was left a
childless widow and henceforth devoted her life
