Sir, 13th April 1858.
Annexed is an application from Mr
John Jackson for the return of the sum of £12 " 14. 11,
which he deposited with me, as reported in my Letter
to you of the 29th Ulto to represent the respective quantities
of Foreign Tallow undermentioned which had been
picked on the sea shore at Cowden - by - Sold for

On the 8th Instant I proceeded against three
three men above named before the Magistrates
at Leaven, 14 miles from hence, when Mr Jackson
attended and gave evidence on the matter - and the
men were convicted each in double the amounts
set opposite their names, -- each in a Penalty
of s 10/= -- and each in £1 " 2. 0 Costs. ----
Parker - whose conviction was as follows - viz -
Double value -------- £10 " 16. 0
Penalty --- 10. ---
Costs 1 " 2 " ---

That amount was immediately paid and
he was liberated ---- In default of payment,
and not having goods whereon to levy distress
without ruin to their families -- Page was committed
to the House of Correction ---- without hard Labour
for six weeks -- and Green for one month, which
I reported to Mr O Dowd in a letter dated the
10th Instant. ------ Mr Jackson most readily gave
every assistance in his power in the matter - and his
application therefore appears to me to merit a favorable
consideration JS.
