Dear Sir
I beg to acquaint you that the
Screw Steam Vessel "Victoria"
of ~Grimsby owned by the "Anglo
French Steam Ship Company
Limited arrived here thiss
morning from Rouen in
from Ballast - when off Folkestone
she was ran into by a Russian
Brig, which did her much
damage The Russian Brig went
down under her load - but
all hands were saved - The
circumstances are these,
The "Victoria" was pursuing a correct
course with all proper lights
exhibited - The Brig was seen
nearly a mile off and had she
kept her course would have gone
clear of the "Victoria" but when she
approached near her course was
suddently by the helm
being put to starboard - The
Master of the "Victoria" immediately
ordered his helm to be ported, as directed
by instructions, hoping thereby
to shoot clear of the Brig, when
the Brig came on [toward?] her &
went down as {stated} before stated
I therefore called upon the
Master to make Declaration
thereof on Form W 2
The Solicitor of the Company
therefore attended and objected to
any Declaration being taken
urging that the 448 Section of the
M.S. Act 1854 related to salvage cases,
