and indeed were Carrie disposed to accept the invitation
it would be quite inconvenient for her to do so
situated as she now is. Lydia remained some time
talking about it. She was evidently much excited, in
high spirits and looked uncommonly well, but I
could not help thinking that I should not be quite so
happy were I about to marry a man twenty years older
than myself. Lydia is not yet nineteen, and Sabrina
is twenty one. while Edwin Ward, S-'s intended, is twenty-
five and his brother Henry thirty-nine.

Spent this evening in reading and writing.

Wednesday. Very stormy. Father was called up very early by
a poor colored woman whose husband was yesterday
arrested as a supposed fugitive slave. Father went
directly over to New York to see about it.

I sat with Cornelius most of the morning. Dear little
fellow, so patient and cheerful though almost discouraged.
He is however much better to-day and sat up some
of the time. He was very talkative. Mr Murphy spent
this evening with Harriet. I spent it in writing my last
week's account in my journal and also read some.
Today I finished working a very pretty basket for Harriet
which has occupied most of my leisure for the last fortnight.
