2. The instinct for health and cleanliness. Things that people eat and drink are so apt to disagree with them, that it is natural that this instinct should so often lead people to eat or drink things, as we see it acts in dogs. Disease being an unexpected and unaccountable phenomenon, the health instinct naturally becomes associated with the instinct for religious and magical rites. The connection between religion and ablutions, circumcision, etc. is more obscure.

3. The instinct of clothing and personal adornment. This seems to have been originally exclusively a sexual interest; but as soon as men's wanderings took them into cold climates, it became a matter of life and death. Magic and religious rites almost invariably call for appropriate
