OPERATION ORDER NO. 47.

September 20th, 1918.

INSTRUCTIONS NO.1.
1. Reference future operations already discussed
The task of the Canadian Corps is to form a Defensive flank to the troops
operating further South, which necessitates the capture of BOURLON WOOD
AND VILLAGE and the high ground North of it.

2. The 4th Canadian Division are operating on the Right of the Canadian
Corps and the 1st Canadian Division on the left, with the 17th Corps
operating on the Right of the Canadian Corps, the 52nd Division of the 17th
Corps being on the immediate Right of the 4th Canadian Division.

3. The 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade will jump off on a frontage of 800
yards on our immediate Lest and will go right through to the BLUE OBJECTIVE.
It will therefore be on the immediate Left of the 38th Canadian Infantry
Battalion from the RED to the GREEN OBJECTIVE.

4. The forward Boundaries and Objectives of the 4th Canadian Division
are as shown on Map No. 1 already issued.

The 10th Canadian Infantry Brigade will capture the first Objective,
(Shown RED on Map) and the 11th Canadian Infantry Brigade (Right) and the
12th Canadian Infantry Brigade, (Left) will leapfrog the 10th Brigade and
capture the second, (Shown GREEN) and third, (Shown BLUE) Objectives.

5. The 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion, (Left) and the 85th Canadian
Infantry Battalion, (Right) will leapfrog the 10th Brigade at the RED LINE
and will capture the GREEN OBJECTIVE. The 72nd Battalion, (Left) and the
78th Battalion, (Right), will after a short halt, (Time of halt to
be notified later), at the GREEN OBJECTIVE, leapfrog the 38th and 85th
Battalions respectively and attack and capture the BLUE OBJECTIVE.

6. The Right flank of the 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion and the
Boundary line between the 38th and 85th Battalions and the Left flank
of the 38th Battalion and Boundary between the 38th Battalion and the 1st
Canadian Infantry Brigade, are as shown on Map No. 1. No information has
yet been received as to what Battalions of the 1st Canadian Infantry Brigade
will be on our immediate Left.

7. The objective of the 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion, (Shown GREEN
on Map), is a line from W.30.c.75.40, following the Railway Line South-
East through E.6.b., F.l.a., to F.l.c.45.37.

8. The position gained must be immediately prepared for defence and
should be capable of repulsing an attack from any direction. Canadian
Engineers will assist in consolidating position.

9. The 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion will attack with two Companies
in advance, one Company in Close Support, and one Company in Battalion
Reserve. "A" and "B" Companies will be the leading Companies. "A" Company
Left, (LIEUT. STARKINGS), "B" Company Right, (CAPT. GOODWIN).
"C" Company, (CAPT. JOHNSON), Support Company.
"D" Company, (LIEUT. ANDERSON), Battalion Reserve.
The dividing line between "A" and "B" Companies as shown on Map No. 1 in
YELLOW.

The Task of the 38th Canadian Infantry Battalion is that part of
the GREEN OBJECTIVE mentioned in para. 7 and includes the Trench System
immediately in front of the RED OBJECTIVE, QUARRIES in E.5.d. and E.11.b.,
SUNKEN ROAD in E.6.a, and E.6.c., TRENCHES in E.6.c. and E.6.d., VILLAGE
BUILDINGS in E.6.d., and RAILWAY LINE WITH STATION AND BUILDINGS in F.l.c.
and E.6.b.
