8. EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES.
The usual equipment for Lewis Gunners and Riflemen was carried.
In addition, each Lewis Gunner carried 2 Hand Grenades, Riflemen carr-
ied 4 Rifle Grenades, No. 25, and Rifle Grenadiers carried 8 Rifle
Grenades, No. 25. Each man carried 1 ground flare and each Platoon
was supplied with 4 S.O.S. Signals, 4 GREEN - GREEN - GREEN and 6 White
Very Light cartridges.

9. TANKS.
Very little can be said regarding the Tanks or their efficiency
owing to the fact that our Tanks did not reach our first wave until
they were passing though the last belt of wire.

10. 6" NEWTONS.
6" Newton Trench Mortars proved very satisfactory when brought
into action and cleared up a very awkward situation at the Factory,
in P.34.d.

11. ARTILLARY.
The Artillery barrage was exceptionally good but did not reach
the area where Machine Gun Posts and Trench Mortar Btteries were in
action.

12. AIRCRAFT.
Most valuable assistance was rendered by the R.A.F. with low
flying planes shooting up Machine Gun Posts and other emplacements.

13. RIFLE GRENADES
Rifle Grenades were used at various points to good effect. It
is considered, however, that much greater use can be made of them in
overcoming Machine Gun Posts, as used by the enemy at the present time.
More training is required in the use of the new cup discharger.

14. COMMUNICATION.
In the advance telephone communication was established from
Battalion Battle Headquarters, however, it was found that with the
rapid and long advances made in our two recent operations, it is
impossible to carry sufficient wire to lay a wire communication and
it is considered that visual should be used if possible in the early
stages of the advance and for the latter period when positions are
more or less permanent, that wire be laid. It may, however, be pointed
out that in this operation smoke interfered with our visual in the
early stages. It is suggested, however, that a Brigade Report Centre
be pushed as far forward as possible with a wire to Brigade
Headquarters. Two much emphasis cannot be laid on the importance of
Signal Communication.

15. LEWIS GUNS.
Lewis guns continued to play a most important part in the operat-
ions and rendered valuable services in taking on targets of opportunity
both in the shape of enemy personnel and strong points. The rifle is
apt to be forgotten in using the Lewis Gun.
