4. 5. ACCOUNT OF ACTION. (Continued).
"A" and "B" Company, who had reorganized, followed the 78th Battalion
as scheduled and as it was seen that a further advance was not possible
these two Companies were pushed forward to reinforce our "C" and "D"
Company, who had already suffered heavily. It was impossible for them
to reach the right of our "C" Company frontage, however, the Battalion
on our right, who had also been forced to advance South of the CAMBRAI
RO D owing to the Division of their Right not coming forward, sent
forcard a small party of 1 Officer and 12 men. Lieut WILLIAMS, on the
right flank held this position during the entire day and at one time
returned to the DROCOURT LINE under heavy fire in order to bring forward
a few reinforcements for his garrison. During the morning Trench
Mortar fire continued and also 2 field guns were firing over open
sights from the vicinity of P.2.?6.00.20. It was also noticed that
Infantry were moving forward to the buildings in P.34.d. and a request
was sent to the 6" Newtonz Trench Mortars to take these buildings on.
Th s was successfully done an dthe enemy was seen to retire hastily
from this point. Owing to thenumber of troops who had advanced to
the RED LINE and were unable to proceed further, there was serious
congestion in the forward area, and we had in our own area members of
three Battalions of the 12th Brigade in addition to numbers of the 11th
Brigade and a few of the 10th Brigade. A great difficulty arose owing
to the lack of cover, in thinning out our line. However, this was done
to a certain extent where possible. By 5 p.m. the 11th Brigade had a
satisfactory garrison in the SUNKEN ROAD and permission was asked to
withdraw the 30th Battalion for reorganization. This was granted and
later an order was received that the Battalion would withdraw at dusk.
The withdrawal was carried out satisfactorily and the Battalion return-
ed to the trenches in C.20.d. and Battalion Headquarters at C.30.c.
00.90 at 10 p.m.
