38TH CANADIAN INFANTRY BATTALION.

ARLEUX Sector May 1st to 4th.
Battalion in Brigade Support. Battalion Headquarters T.26.d.20.30, Reference Map "MAROEUIL",
1/20,000. Each Company employed on an average of six hours daily on working parties, improving
Support and Communication Trenches. Scattered shelling daily of support area, but very slight
losses. Hostile artillery activity below normal. Weather generally fair. R.F.P.

" 5th Battalion relieved tonight in Brigade Support by 7th Battalion, Black Watch, 51st Scottish
Division, and moved to FRASER CAMP, near MONT ST. ELOI. Relief completed at 2.00 a.m. without
any casualties. R.F.P.

Mont. St. Eloi 6th Battalion moved from FRASER CAMP to VALHUON Area by motor lorries, at 9.00 a.m. arriving at
destination at 1.00 p.m. Headquarters, "A", "B" and "C" Companies billeted in VALHEON.
"D" Company billeted in HUCLIER, accomodation being very satisfactory in both places. Weather
clear and warm. R.F.P.

Valhuon 7th Today devoted to cleaning and refitting. Brigade Orders outline period of six days training
to be devoted to open warfare tactics and Musketry. Division in Army Reserve in this area. R.F.P.

8th - 11th Training of platoons and companies in the attack with particular reference to open fighting,
assaulting strong points, and village and wood operations. Particular emphasis
towards initiative and enterprise on the part of platoon and section commanders. Musketry
and Lewis Gun firing daily at HUCLIER Ranges. Two hours each afternoon devoted to sports R.F.P.
and games. Weather fair and warm throughout the period. Officers engaged daily in reconnoit-
ring support lines on particular front of this area, and routes leading up to same.

" 12th Divine Service conducted by Regimental Chaplain in forenoon, with smartening up drill and R.F.P.
athletic contests in afternoon.

" 13th Battalion bathed at BETHONVAL. Training in open warfare tactics continued. R.F.P.

" 14th Forenoon given over to Physical Training, Bayonet Fighting and Musketry, with route march in
afternoon. R.F.P.

" 15th The Battalion engaged today in Brigade manouvers in MAGNICOURT-MONCHY BRETON area, marching
from billets in VALUGH at Midnight and arriving at CHELLERS at 3.00 a.m. Practice was R.F.P.
afforded in moving up to assembly positions in darkness, the Battalion advancing from a
jumping off line at 4.00 a.m. in conjunction with the three other Battalions of the 12th
Canadian Infantry Brigade. The operation were conclued by 6.00 A.M., the Battalion
arriving back at billets at 9.00 a.m.
