Front Line 1917 Sep 14
Battalion in Front Line. A Listening Post of three men
was established at N.33.a.3.8. Voices and movement
were heard from SALINE and SALLOW Trenches and from
the neighbourhood of the RED CHATEAU. A working party,
apparently, fixing wire, was heard at approximately
N.23.a.6.5. Party was fired on by Lewis Guns and
dispersed. The Battalion frontage was patrolled by
the usual protective patrols, but these had nothing to
report.
INTELLIGENCE SUMMARY from 9.00 pm 13th Sept. to 9.00 pm 14th Sept.
During this period, our artillery activity was below normal,
consisting of shelling lightly by field artillery of CITE
ST. ANTOINE and GREEN CRASSIER by field artillery and a
little counter battery work. The fire of our trench
mortars was normal during the night on RED CHATEAU
and Railway Embankment Our Machine Guns
were in evidence with their usual night firing on
enemy near areas. Our Snipers were active, two
hits observed by 145280. Pte. W. Gravelle on enemy
sentries at 8.00 and 9.00 am at N.27.d.80.15. Our
aircraft provided the usual patrols and observing
machines, passing well in rear of enemy lines under
