Front Line 12 Batt. in Front Line as per Oper. Order 97. in the AVION
ELEU sector, the order having been executed.
During the preceding night our artillery was active on
many back areas and LENS. Between 3.00 and 6.00
this afternoon, both field and heavy artillery shelled
GREEN CRASSIER, CITE ST. ANTOINE and CITE DU NORD. There
was considerable fire from Brigade Machine Guns
on enemy communications, with bursts of fire during
the night from Lewis Guns on suspected enemy
posts. Heavy sniping and rifle fire was carried
on throughout the day. Two hits were made, one by
no 261146 Pte E. Joines at N.33.a.5.5. and another by
Capt. J. O. Slaght at entrance to tunnell at N.33.a.75.85
Our aircraft were active this afternoon, one hostile
machine being engaged and driven back over enemy
lines.
Enemy Artillery activity was below normal on this
front. Intermittent shelling during the forenoon
