Front Line 1917 Aug 27 cont.
There was a heavy bombardment by enemy Trench Mortars
of AVION shortly after midnight until 1.30 am and a-
gain at 3.00 am. Their Machine Gun activity
was normal, one gun being active all night from
Railway embankment at N27.a.2.2.
Three enemy aeroplanes patrolled our front line area
for twenty minutes at 5.00 am.
Several parties of enemy were observed at entrance to
the tunnel at N.27.c.80.20. Considerable movement
was observed all day between N.27.d.9.8. and N.27.d.5.8.
At N.33.a.5.5. a party of officers (German) was observed
in SALLOW Trench proceeding to N.33.a.5.9. at noon.
A new type of Hun signals was observed consisting
of double red flares fired from N.27.c.35.15. at 4.30 am
followed by artillery activity.
Our protective patrols shich were out on this Battalion
frontage last night, report a very quiet night, no
enemy patrols being encountered nor movement
observed.
During the preceding night an exceptionally heavy
windstorm, accompanied by rain, prevailed. RBO'S
