around the Church and the obstacle. Hostile artillery
activity has caused considerable damage to our trenches
in the last 24 hours. About sixty Enemy Heavy
Trench Mortar Bombs fell in AVION during the night
and there was the usual Trench Mortar activity on
our left front. At intervals their Machine Guns
between minight and morning, fired on ELK SAP and
ELIU TRENCH. This fire came from rear of GREEN
CRASSIER and N.27.a.5.5. Their sniping was below
normal. At usk last night one of the evening air-
craft patrolled over our lines and another over his
own line, ropping white and red flares. During the day,
six enemy aeroplanes patrolled as far as our Front Line
system, all being fired on by maching guns.
Groups of enemy were frequently observed passing in rear
of opening in Railway Bridge at N.20.d.5.5. It would
appear that this is one of hte routes to and from the
GREEN CRASSIER. Parties have been active during the
day, ciming from under bridge at N.27.d.80.75 along
road, opposite railway track to N.27.d.45.70, carrying
boxes and bags. There parties disappear behind the
houses at N.27.d.2.4. reappearing at N.27.c.80.10.
The bridge at N.27.d.80.75 is believed to be a Headquarters
