at N.20.d.5.5. There was very effective fire on ANTELOPE
Trench during the day. Our Trench Mortars were inter-
mittently active on the grounds surrounding the RED CHA-
TEAU. The usual burses of our Machine Gun fire
were directed on enemy lines and back areas, with
heavy Lewis gun fire on GREEN CRASSIER and along
Railway Embankment. Our Snipers were active
against FOSSE 4. and GREEN CRASSIER. Our Aircraft
carried out regular patrols during the day, with
particular activity between 6 and 8 pm.
Enemy Artillery has been active. At 10.25 pm there was
heavy shelling of the ELIU SECTOR in retaliation to our
fire which opened at 9.30 pm. Enemy heavy artillery
shelled southern boundaries of AVION during the night.
Throughout the day, enemy artillery has been very active
between LA COULOTTE and the RED LINE, with particular
attention being gien tot he light railway between these
two points. The Railway was destroyed at various
points and the support battalion sustained a num-
ber of casualties. The enemy has a sniping gun
north of CITE DU NORD which is very active in the for-
ward sections of AVION, taking advantage of every tar-
get possible in this area. This fire is especially felt
