Front Line 1917 Aug 24 cont.
artillery bombardment through the night, both light and
heavy bombs being used. There was considerable enemy
Machine Gun fire during the night on area back of our
trenches in AVION, fire for the most part being on level
with tops of ruins o houses. Our left sector was
fired on by Machine Guns from vicinity of GREEN CRASSIER.
The enemy's sniping was practically nil. Two enemy
aeroplanes crossed our lines at daylight, remaining
about ten minutes, while three others were observed at
9.30 am for a short period. An enemy party was
seen carrying boards and boxes of N.27.d.9.8. These men
being dressed in dark blue uniforms. Small parties
of the enemy were frequently seen coming and going by
screened road, which road is visible at N.27.c.8.7.
Parties in full marching order were obsered entering
at building at N.27.b.4.5. Men were also seen carry-
ing timber at N.27.d.8.5.
Hostile retaliation to our Machine Gun and Trench Mortar
fire at 9.20 pm was unusally prompt, heavy and sus-
tained, giving the impression that an attack was anti-
cipated and prepared for. At 8.50 pm unusual light
signals were obsered. From various points rockets
were fired consisting of continuous strings of tiny
white lights. The signal for retaliation to our fire
