Front Line 1917 Aug 23 cont.
Our artillery was quiet on this Front except for shelling at
intervals of CITE St.ANTOINE and CITE DU NORD. Both our
Field and Heavy Artillery co-operated in attack of
Left Brigade on GREEN CRASSIER at 3.00 am and this
position as well as LENS, was heavily shelled during the
past twenty four hours. In the course of enemy coun-
ter attacks this afternoon, our artillery fire was almost
negligible, probably owing to the uncertainty of the
situation as regards our troops. As a result, after the
hostile bombing raid on BELL STREET, the enemy was
able to retire on the LENS-ARRAS ROAD without being
harassed by our artillery. This afternoon, some shells
reported to be six such, fired from the direction of LA
HERENDELLE WOOD, fell short in N.26.c, behind our
Front Line and in area of SASKATOON ROAD. Between
4.00 and 7.00 AM. heavy shells also fell short at
N.32.b.7.3. Our Light Trench Mortar guns engaged
N.32.a.60.95. from 1.30am to 2.30 am firing eighty rounds.
There was the usual harassing fire during the night
from Brigade Machine Guns, two of which co-operated
in attack of left Brigade at 3.00am. The Lewis
guns of our Left Company also assisted in this
