Front Line 1917 Aug 22 cont.
N.33.a.23.50. N.30.20. The intelligence gained indicastes
that enemy activity in the area of the chateau Grounds has
increased to a great extent. A working party was
employed there last night, which was protected by three
or four patrols, consisting of small groups moving on the
NORTH side of the enemy wire and acting as covering par-
ties. About 10.15 p.m. a ??b? came up to about a
point at T.27.c.20.15 making a very loud noise. The
??b? stopped and a lot of loud talking and calling
continued for about five minutes. The remainder of
our front was covered by protective patrols, who esta-
blished communication with Units on each flank.
No enemy movement was encountered.
Our artillery activity was below normal on our
Batt. frontage, but intermittent firing from heavy ar-
tillery throughout entire period on GREEN CRASSIER, CITE
StANTOINE and LENS. There was the usual harassing fire
on enemy's ? and communications during the night.
Our Light Trench Morter batteries shelled SALINE TRENCH
and RAILWAY EMBANKMENT during the night, while the vici-
nity of CHATEAU GROUNDS in AVION and N.33.a.4.7 were
dealt with this afternoon by Medium Trench Mortars.
