Front Line 1917 Aug 21 cont
Sniping consisted of intermittent rifle fire directed by
our right company on suspected enemy posts and positions
in the vacinity of railway embankment during the day.
Our aircraft were very active, a large number of our aero-
planes being on observation duty. Enemy movement
was below normal on this front, some small parties
being seen at N.26.b.8.7.
Enemy artillery was active on our communication
trenches during the night. BEAVER TRENCH, VICTORIA ROAD, CO-
LUMBIA C.T., CYRIL C.T. and RED LINE being heavily shelled.
AVION was heavily bombarded at 4 a.m. Retaliation
to our barrage at 4.35 am was slow in commencing
and very weak until about 5 a.m. For an hour then
a heavy fire was directed on our left Brigade with in-
termittent shelling this forenoon. From 4 to 6 pm this
afternoon, the area between AVION trench and PARTRIDGE
Trench was subjected to heavy bombardment with
4.1. and 5.9. shells. This fire was distributed hap-
hazardly without reference to any particular point.
Gas shells were used in LA COULOTTE in the night.
Enemy Trench Mortars were active from 5 to 7 am
on our Left Company front around n.26.c.0.9., shells
being fired from vicinity of N.26.d.9.8. On our Right
