of the craters, our left front was shelled at 9 pm last night,
while at 4 am considerable fire was directed on AVION,
probably in retaliation to our barrage one hour before Golden
rain rockets appeared to be the Signal for the fire to cease.
There was no shelling of IA COULOTTE during the day
and there was little activity at this point during the night.
There was the usual night firing by the enemy of Trench
Mortars. Heavy Trench mortars fell at the Craters on our
left front, while light trench mortar bombs were directed
to our trenches from N. 26.d.3.3. to N.26.c.5.9. The latter
bombs exploded somewhat like the Granatenwerfer, but
were more destructive. Their machine guns were very
quiet except for fire on our aircraft. Their snipers fired
some shots from the direction of CITE St.ANTOINE on ELEU
Trenches. Several enemy aeroplanes crossed our
