Front Line 1917 Aug 12 cont.
bombed the area of N.33.a.5.4. with about fifty trench
mortar shells at 3.15 am. Usual activity marked our
Lewis and Vickers guns during the night. Our air-
craft were active, a large number of our machines being
over our front late in the afternoon. The enemy
artillery was quiet on our front line system with
the exception of a bombardment of AVION and ELEU
Trench at 11.30 pm and 4 pm. Hostile artillery ac-
tivity has been great throughout the day on back areas and
counter battery work engaging the latter heavily. Eight
inch armour piercing shells were used this forenoon
against the Brewery building in LA COULOTTE causing
considerable destruction. These eight inch shells came
from the direction of a line drawn between LA COULOTTE and
BILLY MONTIGNY. Their Trench Mortars were active during
the night on ELEU Trench system. There was considerable
