Front Line 1917 Aug 2 cont.
There were very few targets offered for our snipers & ob-
servation conditions being poor, we had practically no
aerial activity. Hostile artillery was very active at
intervals during the night, but decidedly quiet thro'
out the day. There was less fire than usual on our
back areas but rom time to night, thorughout the
night our front and suport lines, especialy our
trenches in AVION were shelled & there was a limited
retaliation to our barrage at 4.45 am today. Enemy
Trench Morters were active on several occasions during
the night at N.21.c.2.9. N.32.b.2.8. N.26.c.4.9. and
N.26.c.3.6. The activity of their machine funs was
below normal. One gun was located by us at N.27.d.5.5.
whiche swept our front line. We observed the following
signals. At 4 am the enem ysent up twelve single
green flares at N.33.a. and N.33.d. Afterwards hostile
