shelledintermittently during the night. Our right Co.
frontage was bombarded between Eleven and twelve
o clock last night with light shells, but no casual-
ties nor damage to trenches. The IENS-ARRAS
Road was heavily shelled throughout the night.
Otherwise, enemy activity has been below normal.
The activity of their Trench Mortars was very much
below that of the two preceding nights. Their snipers
showed very little activity. Their maching guns
devoted themselves to sweeping the IENS-ARRAS
road and carrying on an indirect fire on our back
areas. Our A. A. guns drove back several hostile
aeroplanes which crossed our lines for a short dis-
tance. An enemy plane seen today has a circle
painted around the black crosses on the wings which
renders quick identification difficult.
For the past three days a large percentage of our trench
garrison have fired at least ten rounds from their
rifles during the day, directed on any point to
their front which might conceal the enemy. Every
