Vimy 1917 May 26 cont
gas shells were dropped near our Front and new Front Lines
affecting our working parties. Enemy machine guns were active
& also their snipers. Our guns drove back the enemy aircraft.
Our strength for the week ending May 26th was Officers 50. OR870.
of these there werer employed away from the Unit and in Am-
bulance. Officers 17. OR. 167.
Batt. in Front Line. With the fine weather aerial activity follows.
Huns big gun searching round transport Lines agains in the
afternoon, one shell falling in the midst of the men and horses
of the Lahore Battery. The 85th had the same experience and were
very lucky. There being no casualties. The debris from the explo-
sion sprinkled the 38th quarters - earth and pieces of shell
falling generously. The other Units moved out under
the fire but the 38th held their ground.
Patrols from each of our three Companies in the Front Line
covered our Batt. front during the night. No enemy parties met
