Vimy 1917 May 6 cont.
Brigade. As enemy movement in his front line area was
more than usual. Our snipers found many targets for ? fire.
Hostile retaliation last night was light so far as artillery is con-
cerned in the area of the left subsector, only a few light shells
being distributed over our front lines. From midnight un-
til 7 am, however, enemy artillery activity was above nor-
mal and consisted of 77's - 4.2's and 5.9's on the roads
marking our flanks as well as on our front and support
lines. Some direct hits were made on trenches, but no
casualties were caused. These bombardments opened at
intervals during the night and continued as a rule,
approximately, for an hour. Many flares were dis-
charged by the enemy, red, green, golden sprays & white.
An effort was made to determine the signals represented
in each of these, but without satisfactory results. During
the day, considerable air bursting shrapnel has been burst
