There was considerable firing at intervals during the past 24
hours but no concentrated fire on the fornt of the left subsector
except from 3.30 to 5 this afternoon when our heavy guns
caused great destruction and several fires in AVION and the
outskirts of LENS. There was a good deal of aircraft
activity this forenoon, with a few of our machines constently
on patrol up to 4 p.m. this afternoon. At 2 pm this after-
noon, one of our aeroplanes was brought down in flames
in rear of the 10th Brigade area near the outskirts of
GIVENCHY. being attacked from above by an enemy ma-
chine. Another of our machines was forced to descend at
10 am this forenoon. He came down under control east
of La Chaudiere. Activity withour Machine Guns and
sniping was above normal, firing on enemy front and
support times. Our Lewis guns are also used to advan-
tage during the night on enemy area in front of our left
